Poultry Exhibition General Info

ALL ENTRANTS MUST PRESENT FLOCK ID CARD OR BLOOD TEST RESULTS BEFORE BIRDS WILL BE ACCEPTED INTO SHOW (exception being pigeon and waterfowl classes; photocopies accepted)

NO BIRDS WILL BE ACCEPTED AFTER 5:00 P.M. ON FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 28th, 2018

Competition open to all standard breeds and guineas, with the exception of Section 9: Non-Standard Barnyard Rooster class.

In celebration of the 200th Anniversary of the Topsfield Fair, every first time exhibitor will receive $10 as a welcome to our show.

Exhibitors wishing to sell their birds may do so by placing a card, provided by the Poultry office, with name, telephone number, and price on the cage of the bird to be sold.
See Section 12: Selling Birds During the Fair for further rules and instructions.

Court Of Honor
AFTER THE CHAMPION BIRDS IN THE MAIN CLASSES ARE SELECTED, THESE VARIOUS SPECIMENS WILL OCCUPY THE COURT OF HONOR FOR THE DURATION OF THE FAIR. EACH COURT OF HONOR WINNER WILL RECEIVE AN ADDITIONAL $10.00 FROM THE POULTRY COMMITTEE.

FFA Auction
There will be a poultry auction on Sunday, October 14th, 2018 at the Poultry Building to benefit the Essex Aggie FFA. (25% of sales will go to FFA). All birds must be blood tested.

Rules & Regulations

  1. All birds except waterfowl and pigeons must be blood-tested before being exhibited at a fair. The proper time for testing is after June 1st. Flock i.d. card or blood test results must be turned in with application. The test is good for one calendar year. All birds in flock must be tested - not just show birds. Birds must be 16 wks. old to be tested. All birds must have current leg bands. Contact (before August 1st): Bureau of Animal Health - (617) 626-1798.
    Any sick bird will be removed from exhibition and the owner will be notified; if not picked up, the bird will be disposed of and State Department of Animal Health will be notified.
  2. Fill out one side of entry form. If Youth is checked, fill in age of exhibitor.
  3. Admission tickets will be given out at the window of the Superintendent's office.
  4. FILL OUT ENTRY FORMS TO SHOW BREED, VARIETY, SEX, AGE (OLD OR YOUNG), AS WELL AS CLASS NUMBER.
    Due to limitations of space, entries (including eggs) will be accepted according to date received. ENTRIES WILL POSITIVELY CLOSE SEPTEMBER 7th, 2018
    1. Due to limitation of space, entries may still have to be rejected.
    2. An exhibitor is limited to only filling a class (3 per class).
    3. All entries are final. No refunds or changes.
  5. All entries competing for a prize must be the bonafide property of the exhibitor, otherwise prizes will be forfeited.
  6. The Society reserves the right to reject entries.
  7. Specimens not regularly entered will not be allowed in the building unless a permit is granted by the superintendent.
  8. With the exception of Guineas and Non-Standard varieties, the American Standard of Perfection will be the guide on judging. This authority will be used in breaking ties. Only worthy specimens will be awarded a prize.
  9. Judges are empowered to withhold prizes when, in their opinion, the specimens are not of sufficient merit.
  10. The judge's decision shall be final except in case of fraud.
  11. During the Fair no birds can be removed from exhibition except by consent of the Superintendent.
  12. Ribbons will be awarded at the window of the Superintendent's Office at the close of the Fair.
  13. The building will be open to receive birds at 11:00 a.m. Friday, September 28th, until 5:00 p.m. No birds will be accepted Saturday, September 29th.
  14. Exhibits will remain in place until 6:00 P.M. Monday, October 8th.
    ALL BIRDS MUST BE REMOVED BY 8:00 P.M. MONDAY, OCTOBER 8TH. EXHIBITOR MUST BE ACCOMPANIED BY A COMMITTEE MEMBER TO REMOVE BIRDS. THE MANAGEMENT WILL NOT BE RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY BIRDS NOT REMOVED OR ANY LOSSES OR DAMAGE FROM ANY CAUSE.
  15. In the event of non-arrival of birds formally entered, the entry fee will be forfeited except where the Management is at fault.
  16. Every exhibitor whose entry fees amount to $20.00 or more will be granted a three-day pass. Those whose entry is below $20.00 will be granted a one-day pass.
  17. The original entry will be final.
  18. All birds raised in the current year are considered young. Anything over 12 months should be considered old.
  19. ALL BIRDS SUBJECT TO INSPECTION AND MUST NOT BE PLACED IN CAGES UNTIL INSPECTED BY A COMMITTEE MEMBER. ALL BIRDS, EXCEPT WATER FOWL AND PIGEONS, MUST HAVE A CURRENT STATE INSPECTION BAND.
  20. Only clean birds will be accepted for exhibition.
  21. Pinion birds in the mallard and call waterfoul class will not be disqualified.
  22. All spotted calls will be judged as snowey.
  23. All bird carriers MUST be taken home after birds are placed in cage; any remaining carriers will be disposed of.

(Age 16 and under)

All boys and girls exhibiting in this section must fill out a regular poultry entry form. Please fill in your age on the form. Under Section, please indicate 1 for Youth, but also indicate a sub-section for what you are entering. For instance, if you are entering a Bantam, the section box would read 1,4.

Entry fee will be charged in all classes.

Competition open to all recognized breeds and varieties. Fill out entry forms to show left of class - this will ensure your entry in the Bantam class and not in Large Fowl. Section 4, Breed, Variety, Sex, Age (Cock, Hen if over 12 months old; Cockerel or Pullet if under 12 mos). No Bantam trios to be exhibited; non-dubbed birds are now allowed.

  3. If bird is double-entered, please indicate.

  5. Poultry Department, Topsfield Fair and Essex Agricultural Society are not responsible for birds.
  6. Exhibitor entries may be limited.

Rules And Regulations

  1. Hen-thrower must handle birds.
  2. Birds must be hand held - thrown into the air - hands not to be over the throwers head.
  3. Birds must fly within boundaries -- length of flight will be marked where bird leaves boundary.
  4. Judge's decision will be final.
  5. Prizes are first, second and third for each class.
  6. Poultry Department, Topsfield Fair and Essex Agricultural Society are not responsible for birds.
  7. Please state breed.
  8. Committee may limit entries because of space.

Awards: FIRST $5.00 AND SILVER PLATE SECOND $3.00 THIRD $2.00 FOURTH & FIFTH RIBBON ONLY.

Section 10: Poster Contest

Theme: 2018 Fair Official Theme "200 years of Connecting Agriculture to You"

Entry Form and Exhibits Must Be Received By Fair Office No Later Than Monday, September 17th, 2018 at 4:00 P.M.

Rules and Regulations

  1. Posters may be decorated in any manner keeping in mind the theme, using original artwork - no computer art.
  2. The posters should be no larger than 36" x 36". Any variation of the theme is acceptable. The poster must be delivered ready to hang. Please only use poster board. NO FOAM BOARD.
  3. The posters will be judged for use of theme, creativity, color and public eye-appeal.
  4. No poster will be hung if the committee feels it may be offensive to the public. Prizes will be awarded as the judge deems worthy.
  5. An exhibitor may enter only once in any given class.
  6. You must send your entry form in by the date requested and follow all the rules and deadlines.
  7. The fair is not responsible for damaged or lost items.
  8. Any entry not believed to be completed by the child will be disqualified.
  9. Each poster must be marked clearly with the name and age of entrant and address on the back of their poster.

Awards: SPECIAL AWARD ROSETTES will be awarded to the best individual and group posters in the show (as judge deems worthy).

Rules & Regulations

  1. One dozen eggs constitutes one entry. Please designate size and color on entry form, for judging purpose.
  2. Each dozen will be judged for uniformity of size, weight, shape, color, texture, and in cases of ties, internal quality.
  3. Standard weights are 27-30 oz. for extra large; 24-27 oz. for large; 21-24 oz. for medium size and 18-21 oz. for pullet size, but uniformity of actual size will rate higher, other factors being equal.
  4. Eggs in competition will remain the property of the exhibitor.
  5. All eggs must be pre-entered.

Section 12: Selling Birds During the Fair

RULES FOR SALE OF BIRDS DURING THE FAIR

  1. A seller MUST be an exhibitor.
  2. Exhibitors wishing to sell birds they've entered into the show may do so by placing a card, provided by the Poultry Office, with their name, phone number, and the price on the cage of the bird to be sold. No other cards or signs may be used. These birds are to remain in the show until the close of the Fair. No cards on cages before judging.
  3. Exhibitors with non-show birds to sell during the fair indicate this on their entry form. These birds may be sold at any time during the Fair by placing a card, provided by the Poultry Office, with their name and the price on the cage. The Poultry Committee will conduct these transactions for you during the Fair. These birds will not be judged.
  4. The exhibitor can set the price according to these guidelines: started/young pullets: between $15 and $20; mature birds: $12 to $50. A small fee will be added to the cost to cover related expenses. 20% of each sale will go to the Essex Agricultural Society.
  5. When a bird is sold a sales slip will be given to the buyer; the exhibitor will receive one after the Fair. A committee member must accompany the buyer to the cage to remove the noted bird and place it in the box provided by the Fair. The purchaser has until the Fair closes for the day to return and take the bird home. Birds may not be carried around the Fair grounds.
  6. No birds from the Court of Honor may be removed until after the Fair is over.
  7. ALL SALES ARE FINAL!
